Identity cards set to be scrapped

Identity cards will be scrapped under plans announced by the new Conservative and Lib Dem coalition government,
the new Home Secretary has said.

Their abolition is among measures the parties have agreed to reverse what they say was
"the substantial erosion" of civil liberties in recent years.

Other proposals include reforms to the DNA database, tighter regulation of CCTV and a review of libel laws.

Labour claims ID cards help tackle benefit fraud and identity theft.

The Liberal Democrats have opposed ID cards from the outset, arguing they are expensive,
intrusive and have done little to tackle the most serious threats to society such as terrorism and organised crime.

The Need For Speed Reductions

Research has shown that ignoring the speed limits on a typical, half hour, car journey is unlikely
to shave more than just a couple of minutes off the jouney time but will increase your chance of having an
accident by over 70%.

It has be found that where 20mph zones have been introduced the casualty rate has dropped by 41.9%.
The greatest reduction was seen in children under the age of 11 years and cyclist injuries fell by 17%.
Injuries to pedestrians have been cut by almost a third.

Everyone must have seen the

"Thick Once, Think Twice - Think Bike" and "Kill Your Speed Not A Child" campaigns
but even with the amount of public information messages we get about speeding I often feel that there
are still a lot of drivers who just don't appreciate the risk they take and the danger they can
be to other people by just driving a bit too fast..

If we all just take a few seconds to think about our driving - slow down a bit - give ourselves a little more time to travel
then the death and injury statistics on Surrey's roads will improve without any need to spend additional
tax payers money - the burden on the local NHS and emergency services will be reduced too.

At 40mph you are likely to kill someone if you hit them.

At 30mph you are likely to injure someone if you hit them.

At 20mph you are likely to stop and prevent an accident.

I use to race motor cycles around Brands Hatch in my younger years so the place for speed is only on
the race track where safety is paramount for speeding vehicles.

So lets do our bit when we drive:

20mph outside schools, shops and residential areas
